Balanced Scorecard implementation step 3: Determine Balanced Scorecard Perspectives

Balanced Scorecard Perspectives

Most common Balanced Scorecard approach is to look at your organization from 4 different points of view, called perspectives

  • Financial
  • Customer
  • Business Process
  • Growth & Learning

Balanced Scorecard Perspectives Public & Private Companies

Public and Private will usually build their scorecards by asking:

  1. What Financial targets do we need to achieve our goals
  2. What Customer targets do we need to achieve to achieve our financial targets
  3. What Business Process targets do we need to achieve our Customer Satisfaction targets
  4. What Personnel Growth & Learning and Systems Upgrades do we need to achieve our Business Process targets

Once Balanced Scorecard is built, then :

  1. If we achieve Growth & Learning targets, we should achieve Business Process targets
  2. If we achieve Business Process targets, we should achieve Customer targets
  3. If we achieve Customer Satisfaction targets, we should achieve Financial targets
  4. If we achieve Financial targets, we should achieve

Balanced Scorecard Perspectives Government & Nonprofit

Government & Nonprofit will usually build their balanced scorecards by starting with their customer:

  1. What Customer targets do we need to achieve to achieve our Mission & Goals. Customer could be ultimate beneficiary of our services or our funding source or both.
  2. What Business Process targets do we need to achieve our Customer targets
  3. What Personnel Growth & Learning and Systems Upgrades do we need to achieve our Business Process targets
  4. What Funding targets do we need to achieve our Business Process targets.

Once Balanced Scorecard is built, then :

  1. If we achieve our Funding targets, we should achieve our Growth & Learning targets
  2. If we achieve our Growth & Learning targets, we should achieve Business Process targets
  3. If we achieve our Business Process targets, we should achieve Customer targets
  4. If we achieve our Customer Satisfaction targets, we should achieve Financial targets
  5. If we achieve Financial targets, we should achieve
